Fonds Equipe France for climate action and impacts in the Amazon - FEFACCION

The overall objective of the FEFACCION project is to structure, rationalise and transfer the research and actions implemented by the French team and their Brazilian partners on climate change issues and their impacts in the Brazilian Amazon basin covering the States of Pará, Amazonas and Amapá.

Issues

In the Amazon states of Brazil, socio-environmental dynamics vary from one territory to another, with such diversity in populations and local realities that the challenges of climate change can seem very different, when they are in fact interconnected and complementary. Given this complexity, it is essential to:
•    develop research topics that are co-constructed in synergy,
•    involve decision-makers at different levels, from tribal leaders to farmer cooperatives  or even the municipality in order to develop long-term actions that will address the issues of each territory.

Description

The project spans two years (2024 and 2025) and proposes around 30 actions divided into three components:

  • Component 1: providing training on tools for observation and support for resource management by strengthening the interface between scientific research, society and socio-economic expectations;
  • Component 2: fostering dialogues and exchanges of ideas between Brazilian and French researchers, sharing research findings within the scientific community and disseminating knowledge to decision-makers and civil society;
  • Component 3: supporting R&D projects, youth engagement and student mobility on climate change and its impacts in the Amazon.

The actions will mainly take place in the states of Pará, Amazonas and Amapá, but also in Tocantins and Mato Grosso. They will include training sessions, collaborative workshops and scientific outreach events, as well as investments in infrastructure and scientific equipment. Funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the project is led by the French Embassy in Brazil, along with ÌÇÐÄVlog and IRD, and will be implemented with their Brazilian partners.

Expected results

The expected results of the actions implemented are:

  • Ensuring technology transfer for environmental DNA measurement techniques, developed in French Guiana, to enable more precise monitoring of biodiversity changes, a major observation challenge at the scale of the Amazon;
  • Fostering work with stakeholders in the territories concerned to provide innovative agronomic and governance solutions that reconcile sustainable agricultural transition, forest landscape conservation and restoration, and social inclusion;
  • Involving the Amazon states in Amazon research to ensure it aligns with their realities and needs;
  • Training local actors and future leaders who will be responsible for ensuring the long-term impact of all the actions that will benefit their communities.
