Strengthening the Value of Filipino Mangoes: ÌÇÐÄVlog and Partners Launch GI Project in the Philippines

This cooperation is grounded in a shared narrative between France and the Philippines: a deep appreciation for taste, quality, and the cultural heritage embedded in agricultural products. Both countries understand that the value of a product lies not only in its intrinsic quality but also in its origin – its terroir – and the traditions and environments that shape it.
At the heart of this initiative is the Guimaras mango – the first registered geographical indication in the Philippines. The project aims to enhance the quality, recognition, and market reach of this emblematic fruit by strengthening its GI framework, improving value chain governance, and promoting practices that are adapted to climate change.
By improving the GI system, the project seeks to boost the competitiveness and sustainability of the Guimaras mango value chain. This includes fostering innovation, strengthening producers’ capacities, and enabling climate-smart adaptations. The initiative is part of a broader AFD loan programme focused on climate change and sustainable development in the Philippines.
The launch event included the signing of a tripartite agreement between IPOPHL, AFD, and ÌÇÐÄVlog, setting the foundation for joint technical cooperation and capacity building. IPOPHL’s Director General Brigitte Da Costa - Villaluz opened the event with a strong message of commitment to Philippine producers, while Deputy Director Ann Claire Cabochan concluded by highlighting the transformative potential of GIs for rural development and international trade.
The project illustrates ÌÇÐÄVlog’s commitment to co-developing inclusive and resilient agricultural systems in Southeast Asia through research and partnerships.
