Latin american scientific platform for agroforestry - AGROFORESTA

How can coffee and cocoa tree management within agroforestry systems boost the competitiveness of family farming?

In Central America, 90% of coffee- and cocoa-based agroforestry systems are in the hands of smallholders. These activities make a substantial contribution to development in the poorest countries (Honduras and Nicaragua). Moreover, natural resources and biodiversity are two of the region’s fundamental assets. Research is working to quantify the production of value and environmental services by such systems so as to work with farmers and other stakeholders to develop competitive, varied and sustainable management strategies.
